RRB Technician 2026 (CEN 02/2026): 6,557 posts, CBT from 6 to 9 October

RRB Technician CEN 02/2026 is now at the computer-based test stage. The test is fixed for 6 to 9 October 2026. The 29 June 2026 notice covers 6,557 vacancies, 323 in Technician Grade I Signal and 6,234 in Technician Grade III workshop and maintenance trades, and applications closed on 29 July.

Two very different posts

Technician Grade III is the ITI-level route, placed at Pay Level 2. Trades include fitter, electrician, welder, machinist, diesel mechanic, carpenter, painter and several more, each mapped to an ITI trade or a completed Act apprenticeship after Class 10. Grade I Signal is a Pay Level 5 post that asks for a B.Sc in physics, electronics, computer science, IT or instrumentation, or an engineering diploma or degree in a related branch. A candidate could apply to only one of the two groups.

Eligibility that applied

Age was counted on 1 July 2026: 18 to 30 years for Grade III and 18 to 33 for Grade I, with the standard relaxation of five years for SC and ST and three years for OBC. The fee followed the usual RRB structure, Rs 500 with Rs 400 refunded after appearing, or Rs 250 refunded fully for the concession categories.

The exam

There is a single CBT for each group; no second stage. Grade III has 100 questions in 90 minutes covering mathematics, reasoning, general science and general awareness. Grade I Signal has 100 questions weighted towards physics, computers and basic electronics along with reasoning and general awareness. Negative marking is one-third mark per wrong answer. Marks are normalised across shifts and the merit list is drawn from the CBT, followed by document verification and a medical exam. The medical category for Grade I Signal is stricter on vision than most Grade III trades, so those results matter at the final stage.

For applicants now

The exam city slip and the admit card will come through the rrbapply.gov.in login, generally ten and four days before the test. Carry the original ITI or apprenticeship certificate at verification; a marks statement alone is not accepted for Grade III. Candidates who claimed the NCVT trade certificate route should make sure the trade name on the certificate matches the trade they applied under, because mismatches are a frequent reason for rejection at verification.
